Principal's Message

Dear Streetsboro High School Families,

I hope that summer vacation has had a good start for all of you.  With students and teachers gone from the building, Streetsboro High School and our staff immediately take on the task of cleaning, maintaining and preparing the building for the beginning of school in August.  While I encourage students and families to enjoy some down time over the summer with vacation fun, I do want to notify you of some dates in August that will be upon us before we know it.

Before I discuss next school year, however, there are a few congratulations in order for this past school year.  First, congratulations to the graduating class of 2018.  This class has been instrumental to the success of SHS in a number of ways.  All of the graduates in the class of 2018 will be missed.

A special congratulations is in order for two SHS 2018 graduates Marie Kallay and Liam Salvage. Kallay & Salvage were both named Akron Beacon Journal / Star Students.  The Akron Beacon Journal/ publishes its Star Students special section each spring to recognize high school seniors in Summit, Stark, Medina, Portage, Wayne and southern Cuyahoga counties.  Kallay and Salvage will each receive $1,000 scholarships from the Beacon Journal’s Newspapers in Education program.

Finally, the girls 4 x 200 relay team placed 8th in the OHSAA Div. II Track Meet in Columbus.  Freshmen Taylor Ivory & Erika Richards,  along with sophomores Tori Wagner and Breannda Davis, combined to break the SHS school record several times on their exciting journey to the state tournament.  Once there, all four runners made Coach Fesemyer proud, qualifying for the finals and then placing 8th in the final heat on Saturday.  Great job to all four girls!

There are a few dates that you may want to keep in mind this summer.  Tomorrow night, Tuesday, June 12, there will be a Band Booster meeting in the SHS Music Room, at 7:00.  All parents interested in supporting the Streetsboro Band programs are welcome to attend.  In order to raise money for next season, the Band will be hosting car washes this summer in the following locations:

June 16 – O’Reilly’s Auto Parts – 10 am – 2 pm

June 23 – Big Dee’s – 10 – 2

June 30 – O’Reilly’s – 10 -2

Please stop by, get a wash and show your support.  While we are on the topic of the SHS Band, I would like to congratulate Mr. Vincent Ciulla, who recently accepted the job of SHS Band Director.  You all know Mr Ciulla as the assistant Band Director for the last year and a half.  We are excited to have Mr. Ciulla serve in this capacity.  We also wish the best of luck to outgoing Band Director, Mr. Mason Smith, whose leadership over the past two years has been superior.    Mr. Ciulla will begin pre-Band Camp exercises on Monday, July 30, with Band Camp scheduled to start the following Monday, August 6.

Student schedules will be mailed out in late July.  Please look for your student’s schedule in the mail.  Any students needing to make changes to their schedule will be able to do so by attending one of two Schedule Review Days, which will take place in the SHS Guidance Office.  Any Seniors or Juniors that need to change their schedule should visit the SHS Guidance Office on Monday, August 13.  Sophomores and Freshmen should come the following day, Tuesday, August 14.  If you are unable to attend either of these days, please call or email your student’s counselor and make an appointment.

Attention all college-bound seniors, the Guidance Dept. will be holding a Common Application Workshop on Friday, August 17, from 9 – 11 am.  We encourage all college-bound seniors to complete their common application during the summer break.  It is a difficult task to accomplish once school gets started.  If your college-bound senior has not completed this task by August 17, please encourage them to come to this workshop where they will be given time, tools and guidance, in an effort to complete their applications before our school year begins.

Finally, we will hold our annual Freshmen Festival on Wednesday, Aug. 22, which is the first official day of school for the other SCS buildings.  Only freshmen are supposed to attend the high school on this day.  All students, 9-12, will attend school for the first time on Thursday, August 23, 2018, at the regularly scheduled times, 7:25 – 2:25.

The High School Main Office will not be open between June 18 – July 31.  Mr. Newman and I are available via email and voicemail during this time.

I hope you all have a wonderful summer,

Mr. Hogue, Principal
